Slider Nav and Image Gallery

There must be a way to do this... I seem to be able to do one or the other, but not be able to combine both.

The Goal: I want to have a slider at the bottom of the design that contains "thumbnails" of images that are buttons. I would like those buttons, when clicked, to load a new image onto the page (just like Help>Samples>Feature highlight: Load images)

Is there a sample of this anywhere... I can do a bit of actionscript, but mainly rely on altering existing files to get my desired effect (I know, that is cheating right?)
