Slow icon refresh in Windows Explorer
Ever since installing Illustrator CS on my relatively speedy Windows XP machine with 1 gb of ram I have an odd problem. It appears that Illustrator has introduced a new icon for all my .eps files. It only becomes a problem when I open a window in Explorer that has a bunch of .eps files in it. All the files have the generic icon at first but slowly -- too slowly -- Windows appears to be replacing the generic icon with a new Illustrator icon. On any folder with a bunch of .eps files this can take minutes to accomplish and is a time squandering, pain in the butt.
Is anyone suffering similarly? Does anyone have an easy, inexpensive solution? -- I'd love to hear it!

Re: Slow icon refresh in Windows Explorer
Tom,
This apparently is a Windows situation and probably is caused by the number of icons you have active. I have hundreds of programs (too many, really) on my system and that's what's been explained as the situation by MicroSoft sources. You might get a fix via MS knowledgebase. Or you might check out this:
Microsoft Windows stores information about each of the icons that are shown in the control panel in files with the extension .CPL. If these files are present and not corrupted Microsoft Windows will display these icons otherwise these icons will not be visible. The control panel files are often found in the C:\Windows\System, C:\Windows\System32, or C:\Winnt\system32 directories once the hardware device or software program related to the icon has been installed.
Additional information about the Microsoft Windows Control Panel as well as related dictionary definitions can be found on our control panel dictionary definition. <http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000136.htm>

Re: Slow icon refresh in Windows Explorer
Bob and Harron,
Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I must admit, I followed Harron's link to the slow EPS icons post, followed the steps and, voila! I'm a happy camper. (or Windows Explorer as the case may be)
