small horizontal Popup Menu

Ask a Question related to Macromedia Fireworks, Design and Development.

Default small horizontal Popup Menu

My horizontal popup menu looks like this:

car (emty place ...........) |bike (emty place ...........) |all the other vehicles|

( All points have the same length)

instead of

car | bike | all the other vehicles |

Is it possible to generate the menu, that all points need only as small place as possible?

Thanks for answer

Yes it is possible Raschwa.
Take a look at the file I made for you. Load it into Fireworks and press
F12 to preview it. Roll over the buttons for the rollover effect.
You can download it at the supplied location.

Let me know if this is what you need and/or if you want to know how it
was done.

Download the file from here: http://www.wetworks.nl/forum/raschwa.png

I downloaded your file, COEN. It's a simple rollover effect. How can i use it on a pop-up menu?
For instance, your example works in "mouseover" but in when i "mouseout" the menu disapears.. (sorry for the bad english..) because in my case the button and the pop-up menu are not next to each other.
If you want i can send you what i am talking about

Any sugestions appreciated..

Yes, i used slices to show/hide the submenu. All works fine except the fact that i can't make the submenu visible when i try to select one of the topics. I tried to enlarge the active area of the "benzina" button with no sucess :( I assume that what i want to do isn't so difficult. I'm missing something.. and i'm trying to find it out..

Folks:

It seems to me that the problem here is the button saying "All the other
vehicles I like" which is driving the width of that pop-up. Try changing
that option to "Other" and see what happens?

Default Re: small horizontal Popup Menu

Ralf:

Well, using the FW pop-ups (and without some manual hacks to the code), I
believe that you are required to use a constant width for each of the
horizontal "cells" reserved for your menu choices. This width will be
determined by the width of the longest menu option, which in your case is
"All the other ...."

The easiest way to do this kind of menu is to use DW to build it with a
layer that is shown and hidden via the DW interface, rather than one that is
built with dynamically written javascript as with the DW/FW pop-ups. The
advantages of doing this with static layers are several -

1. The code required to support the menu is about 15% the size of the code
required to support the DW/FW pop-ups, so there is a significant bandwidth
benefit
2. The code for the 'simple' menu is accessible to Search Engine spiders,
while the code dynamically written by the DW/FW pop-ups is not
3. The code for the 'simple' menu is accessible to screen readers, whereas
the code written dynamically is not
4. The code for the 'simple' menu is accessible to DW's site management
routines, whereas the code for the DW/FW pop-ups is not - you'll discover
this when you try to move an image, or save a page into a different folder
level and your menu breaks

Only the last of these issues is partially soluble by manually hacking the
menu code, but your skill level may give you an aversion even to that
solution.

In short, the simple approach is MUCH better in this case. You can do it
manually, or you can follow these tutorials, if you wish -

http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/menuing/mcloser/index.htm

or

http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/auto_hide/index.htm

It's the MOD I made. I need the original and I lost it.
I will write the person who passed it along to me tomorrow. My Email box
is a mess, need to sort that out first, then get back to you here.
