Smoothwall will overwrite the hard drive, at least the version I used. It is
made to turn a spare box into a dedicated firewall. If you want to retain
windows, or linux desktop functionality on the laptop, you should use a
conventional distro or something suited to that.

Smoothwall is pretty simple to install, hopefully it boots and recognizes all
the nics and so forth. If iso won't boot try a boot disk if they have one. In
my case it recognized the linksys nics lne100tx but not the microsoft nic.

Smoothwall is a firewall, it will make your laptop into a firewall. Your
laptop will no longer be a computer. Please Read Doentation
    smoothwall.org.
