so sloooooow
I imagine this has been discussed before, but I just upgraded to CS about 2 weeks ago, I am running a dual 1.25 g4 with a2 gig of ram, simple tasks such as save as commands takes 4-8 sec. sometimes just changing tools takes forever, I know that 2 gigs is the memory limit and hav it set to 50%, sorry if this is old topic but hope that someone has an answer
thanks

Re: so sloooooow
Dennis,
Even though your problem can be related to a bunch of other stuff, with 2GB of RAM installed you can set Photoshop's memory allocation to 65 or 70%; that'll tell Photoshop to use 65-70% of the available memory, not total RAM installed but the RAM minus what the OS and other apps may be using. Don't go much higher because the OS needs room to operate too.
I haven't received my Photoshop 8 (CS) yet, but I also have a Dual 1.25MHz G4 with 2MB of RAM, and I found that a lot of the minor slowdowns I was experiencing disappeared when I unchecked the box to "Put drives to sleep when possible".
In your case, the first thing I would do is Repair Permissions with Disk Utility.
Having the scratch disk on a separate drive also speeds things up.
And make sure you're set Cache levels no higher than 4.

Re: so sloooooow
Be sure to uncheck Pref/background processes. It includes FileBrowser & will run in the background even with it cleared from the screen. Be sure to uncheck this RAM hog.
How many histories do you set? I try to get by with 10, sometimes 15 to 20. Turn off retain the clipboard. Turn off backward compatibility.
Just suggestions to see if things improve. jr

Re: so sloooooow
turning off backward compatability is a bad idea if you plan of exchanging files with people who don't have PSCS and does nothing to slow photoshop down.

Re: so sloooooow
The only thing that will really help is when OSX has a good OS disk swap disk setup. I hate to say the words...like windows disk and VM swaping. Don't believe ME? Look for speed issues on the windows side of the PS CS. This is one big reason why OS 9.x.x is much faster then the BIG X, easy disk control.
