so slow... - Macromedia Freehand

Hello, I've problem with Freehand MX when I try to move objects from one to another end of the doent. It takes 30 sec and longer, sometimes it says there's not enouh memory to do this. But that must be a joke. Ther are 2 gig RAM in a 3,4 GHz machine. Should be enough for Freehand. I'm working with Windows XP Pro. Can anybody help me?...

Have you applied the FHMX 11.0.2 updater?

Hi,

What applications are running in the background while you use FreeHand MX?
Specifically, make sure that your anti-virus' real time protection is disabled.
This feature affects most applications that deal with vector graphics
conversions.

I hope this helps.

Considering that antivirus software is almost mandatory these days,
especially in a corporate networked situations it seems to me that MM
should take this into account for software design, at least for the Major
antivirus software packages such as Norton

Here are a few things known to slow FHMX to a crawl:

1. Many Raster Effects in doent when Doent Setting > Raster Effects
Setting is set to a high res. Workaround: Set Raster Effects Setting to 72
ppi while working and change to higher res only when printing.

2. Many high-res TIFF images in file. Set Preferences > Redraw to Low
resolution. Make sure to set it back to Full before printing to
non-Postscript printer.

3. Many nested groups of complex paths. I suspect that FHMX applies group
level attributes to all groups even if you have not assigned any group-level
attributes. These multiply exponentially when you have groups within groups
within groups. Workaround: Ungroup and reduce the number and depth of nested
groups. Use layers if necessary to manage complex vector art.

thank to all of you,
yes I think, its the Norton Antvirus that make the problems. But all of our
machines have this problem and I cant disable the protection. This wil end in
chaos. Maybe thats the answer. Disable antvirus, wait a bit, crash your network
and go home. Then it doesn't matter when Freehand is a little slow... :-)

Macromedias mx products seems to conflict with norton antivirus badly. They should figure it out together. I'm facing problems with Fireworks and Freehand & norton....

That's a ridiculous statement to make - disable antivirus realtime protection?
Freehand runs slowly because it's rubbish. It won't export CMYK TIFF files
correctly because it's rubbish. Its redraw refresh is slow and inaccurate
because it's rubbish. I apologise for sounding so negative but I've used
Freehand since 3.1, I'm now using MX and my next upgrade will be to Illustrator
(which runs fine even WITH antivirus realtime enabled... hang on, isn't
Illustrator also a vector application?) because Freehand is slow and riddled
with problems, and Macromedia seem totally disinterested in fixing or even
addressing the issues. Alexander26, your machine is an excellent specification,
it's simply the software which is to blame.
