So I should buy this for example:

Description: Solaris 9 Desktop RTU License, 1 CPU Maximum, x86 Platform
    Edition
    Part Number: SOLII-090-D9U9
    List Price: $99.00
    Ships Within: 8 Business Days

Now it mentions "Desktop" but I will operate the machine as "Server",
does that matter ? Also this license when I buy it is valid for an
    unlimited time right ?

If when you bought the hardware from Dell or whereever and the box
said "server" as in PowerEdge Server, then you need a server license.
If the box said desktop or workstation, as in Precision Workstation,
then you need a desktop license.

    Yes.

I thought server/desktop license differences ended with Solaris 8. Have
    they returned?

Yep. One look at the price list will confirm this. :-(

Solaris used to be licensed by how you use the system, now Solaris is
licensed by the label your vendor put on your system:
An Enterprise 450 Server requires a server license.
An Ultra 450 Workstation requires a desktop/workstation license.

All the definitions about whether the system serves clients and
how many have dissappeared from the BCL.
