Sound appalication freezes 2.4.22 kernel - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

I have a working sound system with 2.4.19, but having built a new 2.4.22 kernel I am experiencing a total system freeze requiring a reset whenever I try to use the sound system. I'm using: Debian testing Sound Blaster Live 5.1 OSS 4Front sound system Google produces some messages showing similar problems with a variety of kernels, but I can't find a solution. Is there a kernel bug, or is it likely to be a kernel configuration issue? If the latter, what should I look at? Thanks, - Richard....

    Hi,

I'm using the same kernel, also with the Sound Blaster Live 5.1, but with
the ALSA sound system and don't get such problems. I haven't tried OSS
lately. I did test OSS with the 2.4.21 kernel though, and I haven't experienced
any problem with it (ALSA and OSS work fine with the 2.4.21). Maybe an
    interrupt conflict?

    So long,

    as root:-
cd /usr/src/linux .....(linked to kernel-source-2.4.22) Make xconfig
    make-kpkg clean
    MAKEFLAGS="CC=gcc-2.95" make-kpkg kernel_image then
dpkg -i kernel-image-2.4.22_10.00.Custom_i386.deb to install, and then
    suitable edits to lilo.conf lilo

The kernel seems fine in all other respects (I'm using it now and have
been for about three days up time). Sound options were all modular, since
the OSS system requires sound not to be built into the kernel. After
installation, the Sound system loads fine with the 'soundon' command, and
the ossxmix sound mixer loads fine and seems to be working. It's just that
the whole thing always crashes when I try to use an application, either
playback or record, e.g. audacity (which has worked for me in the past).

But is this likely, given that it worked with 2.4.19? There have been no
    hardware changes.
