I have had excellent results with Spamfire. It's both a program and a
filter update service. However, it requires at least OS 9.1 or 10.1. See
    their website at www.matterform.com.

What does Spamfire do that Mail doesn't do?

It appears to me that Spamfire does almost the same thing as Mail,
filtering Spam after it has taken up space on the email server.

If you are on dialup, and it does not even download the messages I can
    see a benefit.

I think PostArmor does *exactly* that, and works both on OS9 and X (it's
a java app). There is quite some setting up, but it is free for use with
    one single mail account.

Alternately, you can create a new mail account at a spam-filtering
provider (some are free, e. g. www.tmicha.net, very efficient) and then
reroute your current mail address to this new address (generally you do
this via the html interface, "webmail", of your mail provider). Reset
your email client settings to download mail from the new provider.
You'll get the usual mail from your usual address, but filtered in
    between.

The advantage of the second method is that you never waste time
downloading any byte of spam, while PostArmor must at least download all
spam headers to decide upon their "guiltiness". The inconvenient is,
sometimes you must get to your old account to clean old mail anyhow. I
am still looking for an utility that would delete everything once in a
while, without downloading, I sort of remember there was a freeware
doing this, maybe only OS9, but can't figure its name...
