Two drawbacks.
1. to make it realistic as possible, you're talking 3D
2. to be 'real looking' in needs to spin S L O W L Y.
The second issue can result in a VERY LARGE file, since the most
common method is to have dozens of still images each a tad further
down the road to create the illusion of the globe turning. This will
bloat your file size.
Here's a crude example based on the principle:

More advanced:
[url]http://www.flashfast.com/flash_components/flash_globe.html[/url]

thanks for the links, im trying to find a high detail swf file for an
animated desktop, i dont care about the size, size is not an issue, just a
highly detailed spinning earth
