Default spry submenus hidden behind image

I'm having multiple issues with my first attempt to use a Spry menu (horizontal
drop - down). I've successfully added menu items and submenu items and sized
them (somewhat) how I want them. But when in the browser window, previewing the
page, the submenus are hidden behind an image on the page. The image is in a
div just below the drop down menu. I've tried putting the image in the
background of the div - no luck. When I delete the image, and view in a
browser, the menu items show up fine.

Next issue - the submenu items don't hover for long, and the links aren't
    functioning.

Next question - once I get this menu to work correctly, how do I insert it
into other pages? Will it function like a library item, so that when it's
    edited it will automatically update?
