Static Text Control and 256+ chars - Mac Programming

I'm writing an application which uses the carbon Static Text Control. I'm creating it using 'CreateStaticTextControl' and passing it a CFString, but I'm running into problems with larger strings sometimes. If I'm in OS9 using sny Carbonlib before CarbonLib 1.6, I cannot pass a CFString larger than 256 to this control. If I do, nothing happens, and no error is returned. If I use Carbonlib 1.6 or OSX everything shows up properly and I can use any size CFString. I cant seem to find any doentation stating that I cannot use more than 256 characters in this situation. Any ideas. ...

Default Static Text Control and 256+ chars

I'm writing an application which uses the carbon Static Text Control. I'm

If I'm in OS9 using sny Carbonlib before CarbonLib 1.6, I cannot pass a

I cant seem to find any doentation stating that I cannot use more than
256 characters in this situation. Any ideas.

You can't use more than 256 characters on Mac OS 9 in this situation. There you
    go, now it's doented :-)

    Seriously, you can't.

Does it make a difference if you create the static text control first, and
then set the contents of it ?

No, either of them will result in the control not displaying properly.
I've now been told though, that this will not work, and it is a limitation
    of the control.

The control can only take 256 chars under OS9.
