status bar muting

Hi All,

I'm working on my first project to create a download page. I'm currently using
a simple javascript to mute the status bar to stop the URL of the download
appearing ... however javascripts can be switched off! .... I'm wondering if
there are any other ways to do this. Can you point point me in the right
direction?

there is a way you can change the text, perhaps with a little welcome message - i've been looking for a tutorial to do it myself.
