I just want a metal (hard) hood that fits the 50mm and does not cause
vignetting.

Know that there used to be a metal (probably painted aluminum) reversable
hood for the 50mm f/1.4. I think the last time I bought one was in the
'70s. You could probably still find one -- even if used -- if someone here
can come up with the number.

From the link I found on www.nikonlinks.com you can use either the HS1 or
HS9 on the 50/1.4... but it doesn't specify the AF versions. The only hood
listed for the AF is a rubber hood (HR2).

You would not want it - it would be too heavy (and would increase wear
on the focus mechanism), and if hit, would survive at the expense of the
lens... Nikon makes MANY aluminum shades (both screw in and snap-on,
and several work well with the 50mm f1.4). BTW, if shooting in bad weather,
I will often use step-up rings and large, wide, deep shades made for longer
lenses on my short lenses... (I make sure they do not vignette by checking
the corners of the near 100% coverage F3 VF with the lens stopped down
all the way using the DOF preview).

I have one that is metal. I bought it in 1999 I believe. I'll have to
go home and lookup the model number. But it is a reversable hood and
fits quite nicely. The hood for my 28mm f2.8D is also metal. The one
for my 28-105mm is plastic and I don't like it as much. :)

The snap-on hoods (HS prefix) offer little protection against damage.

When you drop a lens with an HS hood fitted, the hood falls off on the
first bounce and the second bounce trashes the lens. Instead, use a
screw-in hood (HN prefix) which will stay with the lens and help
prevent damage from the second and subsequent bounces.

Needless to say, this posting is made on the basis of experience!
