Strange Formatting with PDF / RTF
Using InDesign 3.01 on a new WinXP with plenty of horsepower, I have an irritating dilemma with ID CS paragraph styles that won't let me get the formatting I need for the project.
The story is, I'm using Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional (on the same machine listed above) to extract text from an older document originally created in PageMaker 7.0. The original file is gone forever, with just it's PDF remaining. I can copy entire pages of the PDF text and paste into ID, but I thought I'd try to strip out any formatting by selecting all the text in the 40-page PDF and saving as RTF and a separate file as text accessible. I can then use Word Pad to copy the RTF into ID.
The problem is that there is still some type of formatting preventing the
paragraph style in ID from formatting correctly. I've tried to figure out
why the paragraph style won't affect the imported text's layout. For example, the unruly text hyphenates at mid-page and will not respond to
soft returns, instead, it delete's the word.
Assistance is appreciated!

Re: Strange Formatting with PDF / RTF
If you want to strip out all formatting, then try this method. It's what
I do. Copy all the text into your favourite text editor (Edit Pad in my
case). This gives you plain text that can now be copied and pasted into
InDesign without any gremlins.
