Strange OS X issues, please help! - Mac Networking

Hello. I have heavy experience with Windows but I am a relativly new to the Mac OS. I bought an iBook in April and "made the switch." Everything has been working GREAT until recently -- #1. I can no longer get System Updates through preferences. Every time I try this option it gets about 3/4 of the way done and then tells me that it could not complete due to errors. Hello.

I have heavy experience with Windows but I am a relativly new to the
Mac OS. I bought an iBook in April and "made the switch." Everything
has been working GREAT until recently --

#1. I can no longer get System Updates through preferences. Every time
I try this option it gets about 3/4 of the way done and then tells me
that it could not complete due to errors. (Updating this way worked in
the past and it even previously popped up a nice little reminder when
there were new updates, which is also gone now..) I know how to access
the updates directly -- but I am curious why this utility has suddenly
    pooped out on me.

#2. More troubling is that recently I have noticed that I can no
longer coonnect to sites such as American Express or my eBay account
-- and it seems to hang up as I try to log in (I assume because it is
having trouble with the secure connections?) but this doesn't happen
to ALL secure accounts (such as PayPal or my bank) -- I have NEVER
had a problem with this on my mac in the past. I have not changed my
way of connecting to the internet in any way and can reach the above
mentioned websites from my PC. I have Safari and IE browsers on my mac
and neither allow me to connect to those pages -- leading me to
believe I have ed up some internet settings somehow. (I was
hoping to give up my PC all together but now I have to use it just to
    access various websites.. )

I have used the system utility tool to restore my permissions -- that
didn't help. I have upgraded to OS X 2.8 and that didn't help. As a
new mac user I am unsure what to try next and wonder if I am now
forced to just start from scratch and rebuild my system -- which I
would HATE to have to do! -- Any Ideas what I can try next?

I would be VERY greatful for a nudge in the right direction -- (and
hope that I can solve this and let my PC "Rest in Peace."

    Thank You!

Well, of course you're going to get all the standard advice -- repair
permissions (using Disk Utility), check the hard drive (using Disk
Utility, the Unix "fsck" command or some third-party utility),
    reinstall relevant software, etc.

However, it sounds from your description as if all the problems you're
having are communications-related. It also sounds like you're using a
modem, since you mentioned "hanging up". If this is the case, you
should consider the possibility of a hardware issue with the modem. In
an old PowerBook of mine, my modem got fried by some kind of surge on
the phone line or something. I had to replace it. If all other
attempts to fix the problem fail, I'd have the machine checked out by
    an authorized Apple repair shop.

Also, you may want to check and make sure your ISP, phone company and
phone lines haven't suddenly developed problems. I think that's
unlikely, given the pattern of symptoms, but it is something else to
    check.

What error does it actually report? Occasionally, Apple's Software Update
servers have gone done for a day or two, producing errors like that. Haven't
heard of it recently, but you never know.

In general, we'll need to know more about your Internet connection. How are
you connected? Another guessed modem, but I'm not convinced. Do you have any
routers between you and your connection? What about proxies?

What is the error returned by the browser (these little things are very
important!)? Have a squiz through your System Preferences->Network tabs, to
see if anything looks amiss, if you haven't done already.

I really doubt that would be necessary. Let us know how you get on.

Trash your modem and Sysupdate Preference files.

Look in your Home----> Library--->Preferences folder.

    That usually works.
