Default stroke centred on path - only option? (MX)

is there anyway to change the default behaviour of srokes as they are always centred on the path - hence if you have an element that is 100 mm wide including a 6pt stroke then increase the stroke weight to 12pt then ithe whole element will expand to around 102 mm (or something). I would like to be able to put the stroke inside the element's path.

    thanks,
    dave

I don't know of any way to change the orientation of the stroke. You
could clone the path, give it a stroke twice the width you want with no
fill and then paste it inside the original path.
