Style question: this should be simple, but - Macromedia Dreamweaver

OK, I have a select box which is a multiple. I want to change the width and height from the default. In trying to do the CSS thing, I tried this: <select name="AssistEmp" id="AssistEmp" multiple> then, in the external style sheet, I have this: ..AssistEmp { width: 500px; height: 200px; } I also tried it without the px. I can plug all sorts of numbers in there, and it doesn't seem to matter. What am I missing?...

    you have ID and classes confused.
    this is an id selector:

    #AssistEmp {
    width: 500px;
    height: 200px;
    }
    <select name="AssistEmp" id="AssistEmp" multiple>

    this is a class selector:

    ..AssistEmp {
    width: 500px;
    height: 200px;
    }
    <select name="AssistEmp" class="AssistEmp" multiple>

    an id must be unique - you can't have 2 'AssistEmp' elements on the page,
    you can target it in css with the # prefix, and in javascript with
    getElementById().
    you can apply styles in a class to any element.
