    Default sun video trouble (PGX)

    We have a sun.

    The sun won't run X via dtlogin. X worked fine before an upgrade to
    SunOS 5.9.

    Running X directly says:

    sunny-root) Xsun
    /dev/fb: No such file or directory
    /dev/fb: No such file or directory
    Graphics Adapter device /dev/fb is of unknown type

    Fatal server error:
    InitOutput: Error loading module for /dev/fb

    fbinfo used to say: m64B2 is PGX 1152x900

    Now it says:

    This version of fbinfo does not recognise "".
    A newer version may be available from http://sunsolve.uk/FAQ/fbinfo
    or http://c3-a.snvl1.sfba.home.com/
    To help update this program, please issue the following comman
    d:
    prtconf -vp | mail eng.sun.com

    Are we missing some packages? How do we go about finding them? We have
    sunsolve access - is the needed info in there somewhere?

    If this is an RTFM thing, I'd be pleased if you told me which M to R.

    I tried googling and running Xsun with -dev fb0 and -dev fb1. Nothing is
    turning up much.

    Sounds like you're missing some of the SUNWm64* packages - try adding
    those from the Solaris install CD's.

    You should have the following in /dev/fbs:

    /dev/fbs/m640 -> ../../devices/pci1f,4000/SUNW,m64B4:m640

    And /dew/fb should point to this same device, or /dev/fb should
    point to /dev/fbs/m640

    What does /dev/fb point to? If it doesn't point to the m640
    device, try doing it manually and then restarting the server. I am not
    using my PGX64 at the moment, and may never again because I bought a
    Expert3D-lite, but the device files for the PGX64 are still there in
    my system.

    Looks reasonable?

    /dev/fb -> /devices/pci1f,0/pci1,1/SUNW,m64B2:m640

    Also might be reasonable.

    Did you have to install any extra packages for this card, or does Solaris
    9 (or other solaris) support it out of the box?

    Our sunblade 150's came with sol8, and pgx64's. I wiped one clean and
    installed sol9, from scratch. pgx64 works fine. I wouldn't fool around
    manually setting pointers to /dev/files, just do a boot -r.

    Not sure if this helps but here is what I have:
    [zelda](53){~}$ ls -l /dev/fb
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 /dev/fb ->devices/pci1f,0/SUNW,m64B13:m640

    I installed SUNWm64.u, SUNWm64x.u and SUNWm64cf off the cdrom (over
    NFS). So now at least I have an m64config, and some reason to believe
    the drivers are on the system.

    Now when I try to run Xsun directly, I get:

    sunny-root) Xsun
    The loadable module for the display device SUNWm64 is not installed.

    Fatal server error:
    InitOutput: Error loading module for /dev/fb

    Anyone seen this before? Google gives 0 hits.

    Am I still missing some package?

    I tried to "modload m64", and I get silence, and nothing new in modinfo.

    The file needed is /usr/openwin/server/modules/ddxSUNWm64.so.1 and
    can be found in SUNWm64w.
