    Thanks for response Mike. What I am trying to achieve is to cleanly
    shutdown X windows and KDE etc.. and run in a shell. On Fedora, I would
    do this by either booting into RL3 or by simply typing init 3 while in
    RL5 ( which would leave me in a shell with no X-Windows. I can then
    restart x-windows by typing startx.)
    Occasionally, there are packages that require this for configuration,
    but for a server where you don't need X/ KDE / Gnome, this is very useful.

    It seems Ubuntu is setup such that RL3 is (virtually) identical to RL5.

    I am not sure why - I will put out another post in this case.

    I use KDE and, IIRC, I use the command
    killall kdm
    to close KDE down when I want to do this sort of thing.

    Assuming that you want to get out of the GUI:

    /etc/init.d/gdm stop
