Symbol font Option+[key] gives unexpected characters
System: Mac 10.3.4, Illustrator CS. Symbol font is the Adobe Type 1 version residing in Classic's Fonts folder.
The problem is basically that most Option or Option+Shift keys don't give me what I expect in the Symbol font. For example, Option+/ gives me a division symbol, but it should be an n-th root symbol. Other programs (Frame, Photoshop, Word, TextEdit, and others) are okay.
The glyph palette works okay, but I don't want to have to mess with it. I tried using the Symbol.dfont along with the Type 1, but no go. (I must retain Type 1, as Frame requires it.)
Anyone else find this behavior?

Re: Symbol font Option+[key] gives unexpected characters
Hi Tim,
I can confirm that I get the same behavior that you do when using the same OS with a Type 1 version of Symbol residing in the Classic Fonts folder.
However, I think the issue may be that we are not really using that font in the classic font folder when working in Illustrator. Illustrator installs a Type 1 version of Symbol in the Library\Application Support\Adobe\PDFL\6.0\Fonts folder. You may also have another copy of Symbol in the Library\Application Suppport\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd\Base folder depending on other Adobe applications you may have installed.
I found that when I disabled those copies of Symbol by moving them to a folder on my desktop then option+/ gave me the nth root symbol that you wanted.
I don't know what other consequences there may be to removing those font files. I'd keep them around just to play it safe.
