Symbols duplicate when cutting and pasting!!!! Why?

Why in the world do symbols get duplicated in the symbols palette when they are cut and pasted in the document? This wrecks havoc with any attempt to maintain a clean set of symbols. This is true in AI 10. I haven't checked in AI11 yet.

Any Adobe apologists who'd like to fill me in on the wisdom of this "feature"?

I'm not getting duplicates in Illustrator 10.0.3 on OSX.3.3.

Steps to recreate in CMYK doc

1) Drag out the flame symbol
2) Edit cut.
3) Edit paste.

I still only have one flame symbol in the symbols palette.

I'm not getting any duplicates in CS.

RGB and CMYK documents:

draw symbol with symbol tool
copy
paste

no duplicates in the symbol palette.

Thank you! Trashing the prefs seems to have fixed the problem for now.

I can't help but wonder why the AI prefs file is so prone to corruption. No other program, that I know of, has this problem on such a consistent basis.

I guess I should just make trashing the prefs a standard daily procedure. Is there any way to retain my setup optons after trashing the prefs? Or must I spend the time re-configuring the palettes, etc., each time?

OK, the fix worked for about an hour. Symbols are once again duplicating themselves when cutting and pasting. FYI… I am using symbols within symbols (i.e., logos on multiple product symbols), and I'm distorting some of the symbols with envelope meshes. I don't know if this is contributing to the problem.

I cannot constantly trash the prefs, then setup my workspace every 1/2 hour. I think this is a bug that Adobe needs to look at. I'll contact them.
