System error -38

We are creating pdf documents from word 5.
When trying to join pdf sections together we encounter the above error (system error -38).

Our method to produce a pdf is as follows:
File/Print/create postscript file. Dropping into distiller to produce the pdf file.

This does produce a pdf document. But the problem lies within trying to join and then save the final pdf.

Has anybody encountered this problem? Is there a quick and easy solution?

Word 5???? While it was certainly the last decent version of Word, it
may be time to move on. However, until you do we need more info to help
you. What OS? Which version of Acrobat? How are you trying to join the
pdf files? Have you checked to see that you disk structure is intact?
Have you tried to run Acrobat with most unnecessary inits disabled?

Distiller 6.

To join the pdf sections together we are going through the file menu document /pages/insert then selectingthe file to be inserted after he last page.

the reason for us using such a old version of word is because we publish educational material for Distance Ed Students. These word doucments we are using a quite old versions which have been revisited and edited by our clerical staff.

This is a common practice which we have been doing for quite some time without any failure.

Our version of Acrobate have been adjusted to spec's which our technical team only have administration to. Not so great when these problems occur, I have tried to get our tec team to solve this problem but they cannot find a solution and I think they believe I am completely crazy.

I hope you can shead some light onto this problem.

Gayle,

Error -38 used to refer to a file not open command. Under OS X I cannot
finds it meanning. I would first try to fix permissions in case there is
a file that Acrobat cannot open due to a permissions problem. If that
doesn't work, I would upgrade to Acrobat 6.0.2 and fix permissions
again. Perhaps it is a problem fixed in a new version of Acrobat.

Thanks Mike, our solution to our problem is that we are "saving as" word 2000 then creating pdf from this.

Time consuming but Ed tech will not waive the access????
