System Preferences menu item stopped working - Mac Applications & Software

The System Preferences application works just fine when I double-click its icon to open it, but why is it that suddenly when I choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, nothing happens? There is no log entry indicating any problem. It's as if I hadn't done anything. Anyone seen this? Any suggestions? Perhaps there's a symlink somewhere that has lost its way? m. -- matt neuburg, phd = com, http://www.tidbits.com/matt REALbasic: The Definitive Guide! 2nd edition! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596001770/somethingsbymatt Subscribe to TidBITS. Strange, I get the same thing. I had thought it was loginwindow.app
that provided that menu, but so far I've not been able to find any
confirmation of that (and examining loginwindow.app has so far been
    fruitless).

Dunno about Matt, but that has no effect on this problem when I try it.

I would try logging in as another user to see whether the problem is
global or specific to one account.

I think it has to do with multiple systems. When I removed the external
hard drive that had the second system on it, the problem went away. m.

Multiple systems may be a necessary, but not sufficient, condition. I
mounted my FireWire drive with its rescue system installed and was still
able to open the System Preferences from the Apple menu.
