Default table columns misbehving...please help

I am experiencing a non-consistant problem (i hate those) where an apparently pixel-restricted width table (and table rows) occasionally becomes wider than those limits. I have provided some screen shots and some more details here at this link. Any help will be greatly appreciated as this is driving me spare. http://www.indigojazz.co.uk/nelmh_menu_error/

    HI thanks for the comments:

I thought that the wildcard width="*" was valid...width=' what ever's left '. Was it ever valid?

Blasted netscrape nadulator, will go and rename all my css's i guess.

Layout: I am aware that the layout is quite complicated but sadly I couldn't see any other way to do it. The side menu, dynamically created, originally had 3 or 4 possible indentation levels. I will have a look at re-jigging it now that it is only 2 levels deep. Lots of nesting.....probably the cause - if only i were allowed to use layers :)

    Nope - not in tables.

Why are you not allowed to use layers?

I have removed the now-redundant colspan stuff and it seems to be working somewhat smoother. It was so annoying that it didnt do it all the time......inconsistant problems are the hardest to solve.
