Default Table of Contents in InDesign 2.0

    Hi

I am trying to create a TOC which looks something like this:

    Chapter 1 Chapter_1_title...........................1
    Section_1_1_title.........................2
    Section_1_2_title.........................3
    Chapter 2 Chapter_2_title...........................4
    Section_2_1_title.........................5
    Section_2_2_title.........................6

and so on. No problems adding the Chapter/section titles and getting the formatting right but I can't see a way to include "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2" etc (the bits on the LHS) in my TOC. I tried using section markers but can't see how to get these included in the TOC.

    Grateful for any suggestions!

The text in your TOC is taken from the section titles on the page. If you want text to show up in the TOC, but not on the page, try placing a heading on the page and setting the "non-print" setting.

    Good luck!

    Ben

thanks for the suggestion - two comments:

    1. I assume that if I want the "Chapter x" text on the same line as the "Chapter title" in the TOC they have to be on the same line in the document. If so, this will mess up my document formatting
    2. What is the "non-print" setting? Can't find this in the InDesign help file

tried using section markers but can't see how to get these included in
    the TOC.

    That's not necessary.

    1. Click on Layout>Table of Contents.

    2. In the Title Field, type the name you would like to appear at the beginning of the TOC.

    3. If these are publications saved into a .indb, tick the Include Book Document. This will include all the styles in the entire book.

    4. In the Other Styles section, highlight the styles you would like to include in your TOC and click the Add button to move them to the Include Paragraph Styles section.

    5. Check all the styles that are in the Include Paragraph Styles section and remove any styles that you do not want to include.

    6. Click the More Options button.

    7. Style: Sub Section Highlight the first style in the Include Paragraph Styles box and change the "Entry Style" in the "Style Sub Section" to the proper style.

If I were doing what you are trying to do with my existing pre-defined styles, I would choose TOC Section for the Chapters and TOC Headline for the sections.

You may need define these styles and set the left indent to be greater than that of your style used for Chapters on the style you are using on your Sections.

Note: The level is for setting the level which you would like the bookmark to appear in the tree in PDF bookmarks. If you set it to say, 3, you will have to click the plus sign in the PDF bookmarks of level 1 to see the level 2 bookmarks, click again on the plus sign of the level 2 bookmarks to see level 3. In your example shown, there are only 2 levels deep. The Chapters are to be set as level 1 and Sections are level 2.
