Tagged text crashes
In a calendar document I am creating, I did one page and exported it as tagged text. I copied all the tags on to the new files and tried to import it into InDesign CS as Adobe InDesign Tagged Text. When I do it crashes with the message "Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. Please restart InDesign to recover work in any unsaved InDesign documents."
The files have the header info including <ASCII-WIN>. When I export the first page as tagged text and try to bring it back into InDesign it gives me all characters in Zapf Dingbatts.
Please tell me what is going on here.

Re: Tagged text crashes
One weakness in the way that InDesign imports external files is that it applies the default character style to them. Make sure your default character style is No Character Style before trying the import. Does that help?

Re: Tagged text crashes
No, that didn't seem to work unless there is something I should do to make No Character Style the default. It is there at the top of the Character Style window and I selected it before trying to place a file. This process of importing tagged text worked on the previous version (2.0).
Very frustrating when you have a job and can't make it work as advertised!

Re: Tagged text crashes
Which character style is highlighted when you have this document open with the pointer tool active and nothing selected?
If it's No Character Style, then this is not the issue; I've not done a lot of importing of tagged text into ID CS, but what I have done has worked well.
Does your file make use of any nested styles?

Re: Tagged text crashes
Regardless of character style, do you have Dingbats selected as a default
font? What shows in the character palette when nothing is selected, and when
no document is open?

Re: Tagged text crashes
Nothing I do makes any difference! I created a "Default style" based on nothing and had it selected. I tried again with the same crash. Guess I'll have to go to plan B an do a search and replace on the bare text files. Just so frustrating when it works on 2.0 and not on the "Improved" version.

Re: Tagged text crashes
The only character style I have in the window is bullets with Dingbats as the font. Other styles were created in the paragraph style window. I used the dingbats character style to do a search and r5eplace for the * character.
Below is the complete tagged file for one month. Perhaps yoou can see something I'm missing that would cause it to crash.

Re: Tagged text crashes
Fred,
There are two errors in your tagged text file. The first is in the style definitions, second line (the line that starts with <vsn:3.000000>. In that line you have this:
<ctable:=<Pape<pstyle:Refuse
which can't be right. I guess this would be your fatal error (I haven't tried it--I want to keep my shortcuts in place). The second error is style instances of the form <PSTYLE:LEAF>. The style tags are case sensitive, so you should write <pstyle: LEAF>. This is not a fatal error: it just imports the styles as lieterals in your text.
By the way, if you have an ID document with the styles defined in it, there is no need to put the style definitions in your tagged file. All you need is this:
<ASCII-WIN>
<Version:3.000000><FeatureSet:InDesign-Roman>
Followed immediately by your tagged file. Place that file in the ID document that has the style definitions in it.
It looks as if you can solve your problem by deleting the file header (everything until the first occurrence of <pstyle:Month>) and replacing that with the two-line header I just quoted. Hope this helps.
Peter
