If you're adding a file, the file already exists. So what would be the
    point of a template? m.

You're right. There would be no point for a template for "Add file".
I mistakenly said "Add file" when I meant "New file".

It would be even better if I could define a list of file templates that
could supplement the list provided by the "New file"
    dialog/wizard/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. That's presuming that
XCode's templates use keywords (or something similar) for substitution
text when the templates are instantiated (and there is some
doentation available that describes the defined keywords).

What I'm doing at this point using "New Empty File" , inserting my own
template, editing stuff like the file's name in the preamble comments,
then using "Save As..." to put the file in the proper place in the
project (and add it to the project as well). "New File" does all this
for me, it just doesn't use the template that I'd like.

So you're asking about the templates used by "New file"? They are in the
Application Support folder (Apple/Developer Tools). (That's using
Panther and XCode; previously, things were a little different.) Copy to
the parallel place in your home directory and edit freely. m.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
