Alas, time and money (lack of each) has postponed my comparison shoot
indefinitely- I have access, for short periods of time, to the Tamron,
Tokina, Sigma and Nikon lenses in this approximate range, and was going to
    test them.

I think now that this sort of activity at my age is probably a rather sad
waste of my time. I might just go and take photographs.

I think that anything that brings enjoyment and reward is worth every effort
that we make for it... Not to mention the precious few moments of
serendipity that occasionally grace our lives...

Jeez.. Kinda sounds like I'm in touch with my feminine side this evening
    doesn't it.. :-)

    lol

Like other XR lenses it is built for compactness rather than optical
quality. The small size of this lens dictates that there are likely
to be several optical weaknesses, including light fall-off and
softness at the edges. You cannot expect any lens that is so compact
to be optically a strong performer.

If its compactness and low price appeal to you, perhaps you should
consider whether trading off some optical quality is worthwhile.

Actually, the reason I am looking for a new zoom lens is I need a lens with
better optics for my F100. I was thinking of the new Nikon G lens, but then
I wouldn't be able to use it on my FM3a.

Yes, that's the dreaded "Nikon conundrum", also known as "G".

    :-(

There is a remedy; buy a pre-G AF Nikkor.
