    To figure out what might be on a tape, you can look at the first
    few blocks with dd. Fist run "tcopy /dev/<tape device>" to find out
    the block size and number of records in the first file and then
    use that with dd (i.e. "dd bs=N count=N < /dev/<tape device> > file").
    Look at the resulting output file to see if it makes any sense.
    You man also need to consider using the compressed tape device.

    Its asking you to enter the volume number, which should be 1 -
    the same as the number of posts you should make.
