Default tape error's while trying to retreive data

    Hello,

I have SCO 5.0.6 with Python 28388 dat drive. I am receiving error
trying to access data on tape. Any thoughts?

I am receiving the following message:

    dtype /dev/rStp0

    /dev/rStp0 : unrecognized data

    tape status

    status: ready beginning-of-tape

    soft errors: 0

    hard errors: 9

    underruns: 0

    cpio -itvc -I/dev/rStpo

cpio: this is not a cpio file, bad header.

    tar tvf /dev/rStp0

    tar: blocksize = 20

    tar: directory checksum error

    tar tvfb /dev/rStp0 20

    tar: directory checksum error

These messages are clear enough. The tape you put in the drive does not
contain tar, cpio, or any other format that `dtype` recognizes. So what
_did_ you put in the drive?

If it's a blank tape, this is all 100% sensible. Tapes do not come from
the factory with tar or cpio archives on the medium.

If you had written something on the tape, apparently you're not sure
what, or you wouldn't be prodding it with every available stick.

    Try:

    hd /dev/rStp0 | more

to get some idea of what's out there.

    Just a thought.

Its usually worth giving tape drives a clean if you get unexpected error
    messages.
