target="_blank" in contribute??
When using the browse feature, I browse through our site to get to the page I
need to edit. However, if the link to the page is set to open in a new window,
it opens it in explorer and not inside contribute.
For me, I know how to browse and find the file I need. But, I have deployed
Contribute to other departments that are editing their portions of the website.
I tried explaining how to browse to the file, but that seems overwhelming to
them because we have so many pages, folders, etc. and none of them have worked
with websites before.
Anyhow, does anyone know how to make contribute open pages inside itself
instead of using explorer when the link calls a new window? (like a
target="_blank" link?)

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
So, ALL your hyperlinks when clicked within the Contribute browser cause IE to open?

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
Oh, you said just the "New Windows."
I tested mine and the same thing happens. I don't use that many "new
windows." I don't think it's possible to have more than one window open in
Contribute. But, it will be interesting to see if someone has a solution. One
kludgey work around would be to have them just navigate to the page they need
to edit (in IE's new windows) then copy/paste the URL into CTB's location bar
for editing. If you're hiding the address bars in the new windows, they could
right click anywhere in the page and go to properties for the URL. Yes, I said
klooodgey. =)

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
Yeah, I thought about the 'copying link' thing. My whole problem is that the
users are very NON technical, and any extra steps to the process and they freak
out. It would be nice to have the new windows just load inside contribute, but
I am thinking that it isn't possible. Sigh.

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
Ok, here's a more user-friendly way that I just now discovered. In CTB, if
they right-click the link that opens the new window and select "Open" it should
open in the same window. The downer is they need to know which links to do
that with.

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
Awesome! I just tried it, that is a great solution for now!
They should know which links, because we have a news page and each link to an
article is in a new window, so any link on that page would be one.
Thanks!

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
Could I just ask, why you would expect the Browser in CT to behave differently
to a normal browser when coming to a target="_blank" attribute?
Here is anoher idea..... Remove all trace of target="_blank" for a more
accessible website (as stated in the Web Content Accessibility Guildlines)

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
Forgive the short delay in responding, but in my experience when you click a
hyperlink that opens a new window in say, Firefox, it doesn't open it up in
Internet Explorer. So, it seems reasonable for a user to expect a link to open
within the Contribute "browser." Secondly, you shouldn't be quite so pedantic
without knowing the purpose of this user's interface. For all you know, he's
building a website targeting say, sharpshooters. I wonder how many blind
sharpshooters there are in the world. =):beer;

Re: target="_blank" in contribute??
It is opening in the contribute "browser", because the Contribute browser is
Internet Explorer, and as a result, inherits all of Internet Explorer's
behaviors.
I could go on at great length about how annoying target="_blank" is, but I'll
just say that it's something you should probably avoid. Internet Explorer users
find it annoying, because its more convenient to hit the back button than
closing the new window, and everyone else doesn't even notice the behavior
because they've middle clicked for it to open in a new tab. It's an issue of
user control.
Just my two cents.
