techniques used

hey, i am in the middle of building a website, and am trying to dig a bit deeper into photoshop for my image editing. check out this link : <http://www.cursivearmy.com> then visit the flash site. the background blk and wht images on the left have the look i am trying to obtain. kind of a rustic, slightly washed out and shadowed along certain edges deal.

if it is obvious to any of you what techniques were used to obtain this look in the images, any advice would be great. i cant get anywhere close on my own. here is one of the pictures i am trying to format this way. <http://www.almightyflyingmachine.com/images/screaming.jpg>

even when i just try and extract the two guys by their outline, i get a bad result, not at all smooth, and blending into a black background. thanks in advance for the help!

also, how do i get rid of that terrible red eye? looks like a demon or something
