It's easier to tell who did what, and is slightly more secure (in a> Why can I not access my linux server as the root?
security-through-obscurity sort of way), if you always log into your
machine as a normal user and use 'su' to become root. I notice the
word 'telnet' in your subject line, though; you really shouldn't send
passwords, especially your machine's root password, across the network
in cleartext, as telnet does. Use ssh instead.

compiling/add modules when no root access
Is there a way for me to compile/use modules when I do not have root access to a Unix box? Can I modify the Makefile or set an environment variable,... -

you're going to be sending passwords anyway. Uninstall telnetd, get
ssh, forget telnetd exists.

allows someone to try direct hacking into a machine with a "absolutely
known" account.
Bare minimum would be SSH for ROOT. But even then I am Dennis Leary.
