Tempdb is full? - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

I keep getting the error; "Tempdb is full" How to I stop this from happening in the middle of huge transactions? I have a database that's approximately 3gb large. There is 1 main table containing all the records (in tact) and then 4 other tables that will contain sorted and manipulated data, but I've gotta first get my records into those tables. Not only do I run into the "Tempdb is full" error, I have a problem overriding index key violations... how do I get it do skip a record if it violates an index key? I know I'm asking ...

am! LOL. Thanks a lot :)

    Refer to these url
    Shrinking tempdb

    Tempdb growth

Do a check for unique values before inserting/updating to skip duplicate
value to avoid unique index violation error. If you can post the sample it
would be easier to give some solution.

i personally use bcp/BULK INSERT for anything above 100k rows. do a quick
BOL check -- these are trivial.

can't image what will happen when you later try to actually DELETE the
source table :-)) (with all the relations "in tact")
