Template update problems

    Default Template update problems

We just found out that some of the files that use are templates are not
    getting updated.

I did wonder if my creating the files from another file (that is using that
template) would cause it not to be seen by the template when it is updated?
It does have all the correct lines in it that refer to the temp.

If this is the case, how can I resolve this problem?

    Thanks

    Tom

Modify, Templates, Apply Template to Page.

If you open up the page that doesn't seem to be updating, go to Modify,

I don't know for sure but if it wipes out your content then it sounds like
the page isn't set up for the template regions properly. I know I've used
the apply template to page in the past and it hasn't wiped out the content.

    The regions look fine.

But when I try to do that, it tries to put another copy of the page into the
editable region or it just makes it the same as the template, which is not
    what I want.

No - it couldn't. I do it like this all the time.

Here are five ways to make changes not propagate from Template to child -

    1. Rename the Templates folder
    2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in the site other
    than root level
    3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
    4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which will not
    propagate)
    5. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template and child page
    is broken

The latter problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced > Recreate Site
Cache, and the three others can be fixed by just not doing them. Have you
    done any of those?

If you are seeing this, then you are applying the wrong template to the
page. If the page and the template both have the same number of editable
regions, and if those regions have the same name, then you cannot lose
    content.

No - remember we talked about this before and you didn't use it either.

"I don't find much use for the function either."

From the "Templates - Apply Template to Page problem" posts.

We have seen all kinds of little quirks. On my boss's machine, he will find
that when he tries to change the images of some <td> by using the point to
file method, it won't let him. Either he will get the circle with the line
through it (signifying he can't do that operation) or the program will allow
him to make the change, but won't actually change it. If he does it through
the code page, it works fine.

Then he will bring the program down and/or reboot the machine and it will
    work fine.

I have seen similar things on my machine.

Would that solve the problem of not showing files as readonly or checkout

No, I don't think so. But is a remote network shared drive anywhere in your

Not using it, and not understanding it are two different things. I can
guarantee you that if you have the same editable regions in the template and
the child, then applying the template to the child will not lose content for
    you.

    Yes.

This is where the Web Site is. Both me and my boss access it from our local
machines. We have our machines local sites on our machines and our
remote/testing sites on the shared machine.

Not sure what you mean here.

We have a Web Server with the Site on it (not live yet).
We each have our own machines.
We each have a copy of the Site on our machines (local)

    In the Local info:

Local Root Folder and Default Images Folders point to our site on our local
    machine (not the web server)
HTTP Address points to the Web Server

    In our Remote info:
    Access is local/network
Remote Folder points to the Root folder on the Web Server as a share
    (Z:\Inetpub\wwwroot\root folder\)
all the check boxes are checked

    In Testing Server:

    Server Model: Asp.Net VB
    Access: local/network

Testing Server Folder points to the Root folder on the Web Server as a share
    (Z:\Inetpub\wwwroot\root folder\)

    Cloaking:

Enable Cloaking is checked (although I am not sure why I need that).

Nothing out of the ordinary there, Tom. I was worried that you might be
sharing a local site across the net. But sharing a remote site is quite
    usual.

I recommend you contact Macromedia directly and use one of your one-on-one
    support incidents.
