Testing server for dummies
Can somebody tell me how to set up a testing server? I'm stymied by the pathway
option in the site definitions dialog box. My files are in a folder called
"local sites" under my user name. My server is somewhere on my Mac, which is
running OS10.4

Re: Testing server for dummies
Thanks, but I still don't get it.
You've got the remote info on my computer hard drive. My remote info is and
FTP connection to my web site, so it can't have the same address as the local
testing folder.
Also, does the folder on my Mac which has the site have to be INSIDE the Mac's
user_name/sites/ folder?

running OS10.4"? it means your server is local so you don't need FTP but
Local/Network access
if you're trying to connect to a remote server just use the data your
ISP gave to you (FTP host, user, password)no. you can store it wherever you want. user_name/sites/ is where you>

"upload" the files when working local; i.e., when you use the Apache web
server installed in your Mac to view your pages

Re: Testing server for dummies
My testing server folder is: Skipper II:Users:stu:localsites:success:
My URL prefix is: http://localhost/~stu/localsites/success/
In Safari I get told it can't open the page because it could not connect to
the seerver 'localhost.'
I checked, and web sharing is on.

Re: Testing server for dummies
the folder is named Sites by default, no localsites. did you change its
name?
did you tried Murray's suggestion? you should see a page confirming
Apache web server is running

Re: Testing server for dummies
Then you do not have Apache running properly.

Re: Testing server for dummies
probably the Apache problem can be be fixed through the Terminal but i
don't think you're prepared for that mess. i guess you should try
reinstalling OSX if it isn't a bigg deal for you

Re: Testing server for dummies
In fact it seemed reinstalling OSX was the cause of the problem. I had just
archived and installed (rather inadvertantly) because I wanted to use iPhoto
which I had trashed earlier. It's only since that reinstall that I found the
web sharing problem.

Re: Testing server for dummies
try stop and start the web server in the System Preferences. if it
doesn't fix your problem you may have to do a OSX clean install
