Text box with stroke inset
CS(3.01) Mac G5
It would be very helpful if we could draw a text box and be able to have a stroke on the box with the ability to inset the stroke (for instance inset .125 "), similar to being able to have text inset using text frame options. I've done a work-around by creating a custom stroke. But it sure would be easier if we could have that option in the text frame option box.

Re: Text box with stroke inset
My first reaction is: why not make the box smaller? But I suppose you're using a fill as well -- is that it? Otherwise your request is a bit hard to understand.

Re: Text box with stroke inset
Yes, we have a fill. We have been doing a seperate box just for the rule because it needs to sit inside the filled box by an eighth inch. Then the text has to be eighth inch inside of the ruled box.

Re: Text box with stroke inset
Seems to me that a custom stroke is the ideal solution here. This must surely be a very rare need in the community at large.

Re: Text box with stroke inset
I would use two boxes. One with outer box/fill and a second with the stroke and inset text. May be a plug-in that does this. You can probably do this in AI too but may be a bit more work than it's worth.

Re: Text box with stroke inset
Here is a way to accomplish this with one frame. First create a new stroke style based on stripe type. Adjust the stroke properties: Start-50%, Width-50% (Basically the black just at the bottom). Apply frame with new stroke. In the stroke palette, apply desired color to stroke. Under Gap color, make the color and tint the same color you want the fill of the frame. You will have to tweak the weight and stroke properties, but this will create the effect of an inset stroke.

Not at all. I'd love to have that capability.

That's what Nancy said she'd done in the topic (without the details).

Bob,
Well, custom strokes is the way I'd tackle it.

Re: Text box with stroke inset
Me, too, when I need it. I've also done some of this in Photoshop and
Illustrator. This business is all about workarounds. <g>
