Default text in a box - can you stroke the box?

I've always done text in boxes in two parts - one is the box with the stroke, the other is the box with the text (no stroke no fill). Is there a way to make the box containing the text have a stroke and/or fill? The same box, not a duplicate placed over/under the text.

Select the box with the direct selection tool. Stroke it.

You can but you probably don't want to do it this way. The text will overlap onto the stroke. You really need a second object to give the text some room.

If you're concerned about stroke overlap, after adding your stroke, you can double click the type tool to inset your type from the text box (that is, if you want to stroke the box itself rather than doing your "two parts").

The proper way to do this is with an Effect.

Draw you text box select it with direct select tool in the appearance palette give the path a new stroke select a color and weight then with this stroke selected in the appearance palette select Effect>Convert to Shape>Rectangle and in the effects option dialog choose and offset for the stroke.

You can then change this if you wish to round corner or even elliptical. This has the advantage of of not reflowing the text.
