Text outlines for exact spacing?

Hi,

I am creating a business card. I want the txt to adhere to a grid of 12pt squares vertically and 5mm horizontally. After I have set my grid to 12 points with 4 subdivisions for the vertical layout I have found that to place the text exactly I had to convert it to outlines. Is this the normal procedure and is it ok to give the printer the file in text outlines. What will be the best format to hand the card to the printer (eps,pdf)?

I have recently purchased the CS Suite. I thought that I read somewhere that you could download free additional fonts for Illustator CS. Am I right or was I dreaming??

What does your post have to do with "text outlines for exact spacing"?

The best answer is: ask the printer. Some prefer PDF, some don't. There
may also be other specs you need to adhere to that you're not thinking
about here (and therefore not asking).

It will be one option if using proportionally spaced fonts. Only fixed-width
fonts (such as Courier) will 'naturally' fit a fixed grid.

You could also kern the individual characters to achieve the same result.

No problem in converting to outlines for print.
