Text output - useless option? - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

Hi! I'm trying to retrieve a 'text' data column from a table, and return it in a text data type OUTPUT parameter in my stored procedure. However, no matter how I try, I cannot get T-Sql to assign the text value to the parameter. I've also come across a couple of postings on the web stating that this is not possible. Still, the T-Sql doentation states that 'text' is a valid datatype to use as an output parameter. Sure it is; there is no error message when I define it as such. But what good is it if it cannot ...

Default Text output - useless option?

    Hi!

I'm trying to retrieve a 'text' data column from a table, and return it in a
text data type OUTPUT parameter in my stored procedure. However, no matter
how I try, I cannot get T-Sql to assign the text value to the parameter.
I've also come across a couple of postings on the web stating that this is
not possible. Still, the T-Sql doentation states that 'text' is a valid
datatype to use as an output parameter. Sure it is; there is no error
message when I define it as such. But what good is it if it cannot be
    assigned to?

    Am I overlooking something here?

To look at it differently, why do you want to assign it as an output
parameter. Just return the column from your stored procedure using a SELECT
statement. This will returned in the result set for your application. If you
are calling this stored procedure from another procedure, then things get a
little tricky, since the OUTPUT parameter variable cannot be declared as
TEXT in the calling stored procedure, which is why the limitation probably
    exsits.
