Text: Spacing Between Characters - Macromedia Freehand

I am at my wits end. I am trying to select text and increase the spacing between letters. I have followed the help instructions in the Freehand programme but cannot get it to work. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?...

    Spacing between letters - Kerning.

Select (highlight) text you wish to kern, alt + right arrow key will increase
kerning by 1% em, alt + left arrow key will reduce kerning by 1% em.

Holding shift together with alt will adjust kerning in +/-10% em increments.

Alternatively, select (highlight) text you wish to kern, select text in object
inspector, adjust by entering +/- % em. Use this option to examine current
    kerning of highlighted text.

    Hope that is clear.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I am curious about what "kerning" means?

Definition as in Freehand Help files-

Kerning controls the space between two characters, relative to the point size
of the current font. A positive kerning value increases the space between
characters; a negative value decreases the space. Range kerning controls the
space between all characters in a selection.

I should have added that what I was describing previously was range kerning,
individual letter (space between letters/characters) kerning is acheived by
positioning the insertion point between the characters you wish to adjust.

I used to do this manualy with little slices of copper or brass (hand setting
metal type), those were the days, life is so much easier now! Can't remember if
it was possible to simulate baseline shift with metal type, (use up and down
arrow keys with alt key, character/s selected).
