I usually type <f>, draw a frame, type , click, and start typing in the new text frame.
In Photoshop you only need to hold Shift to create a text layer on top of another text layer. Would be nift, if InDesign could do it as well...

As long as you can see some part of the window that is not within the text frame, try the following:
Start to draw your new frame outside the old one.
In the middle of dragging, stop, but don't release the mouse.
Press the spacebar and then move the frame inside the old one.
Then continue to drag, or release and start typing.
