Text Wrapping Issues
I'm having some strange problems withhow text breaking in a file I'm working on. Its a block of rag right copy. There are many instances where ID is breaking lines well short of the right margin, when there should be plenty of room for the words to fit. I checked all the possible causes like right indent setting, or invisible boxes getting int the way. Seems to be no reason for this. If I force break the line where I think it should break, the copy will jump back up to where it should be, so that also tells me there is nothing causing the copy to not fit.
Any ideas?
On a related topic, is there any way to stop InDesign from rebreaking copy ABOVE where you do a force break. Often during a final editing of a job, I will want to fix one bad break at the bottom of a paragraph, and InDesign will then rethink all the breaks before it in the paragraph, often causing more problems. This is very annoying.
Thanks for any advise.

Re: Text Wrapping Issues
What you're seeing is the paragraph composer in action. Perfectly normal.
You can certainly set the paragraph options if you're not happy with the
defaults.

I wouldn't call it perfectly normal that it's leaving a half inch gap at the end of lines, when there is plenty of room to fit at least 10 more characters in. If I can put a break in the next line, and get three words to jump back up, then I don't see why it's not happening automatically. I tried all the hyphenation options I could find & nothing made a difference.

Re: Text Wrapping Issues
You find two dialogs in the menu of the paragraph palette: "justify" and "hyphenation".
In "justify" you find a setting "paragraph composer" vs. "single line composer".
The paragraph composer tries to find the best composition solution for the entire paragraph. Chanigng things at the end of the paragraph make better breaks at the beginning possible / make other compromises at the beginning of the para necessary.
Most users that understand its intricacies love the para composer.
ALL users that say "I want to have control" use the single-line composer.
In "hyphenation" you find a setting that defines a compromise between spacing and hyphenation. By default it is set to the middle and I suppose that it is in your document as well.
With that you tell InDesign not to squeeze characters into a line if that means it has to hyphen a lot. Squeezers tend to put that value all to the left.
I wouldn't call it perfectly normal that it's leaving a half inch gap
at the end of lines, when there is plenty of room to fit at least 10 more
characters in.
There are many more criteria for a well set text which you do not mention. How did you set those options?

Re: Text Wrapping Issues
open your hyphenation window and set the safe zone, last filed of the collumn, to 0; this might help a bit.

Re: Text Wrapping Issues
Gerald, thanks for the primer on single line vs. paragraph composer. That seems to solve the immediate issue, and also helps me understand how to control breaks overall in the future. I wasn't even aware of that setting.
