What PDF file did you have open? How was it created? What were you doing when you got that message?

    dear diane
i had this error very early on ...
if i recall this is a preferences choice ...
telling you that you have more pages in your document then you have it
    set to crunch on...
i am at a computer that does not have acrobat on it so i cant call up
preferences to check the exact place...
i set mine on a ridiculous 5 or 6 hundred pages ... just cause
run through the preferences and look at every drop down option and each
    and every check box...
this will lead you to the answer...
    good luck yours

I work for a publishing company. I am working on a multi-chapter high resolution pdf - this error appears when I try to reduce the file size ( using that command in the file menu). It is not an extreme file in any way - size, number of pages, etc.

I do this 20 times a day and I have never seen this error.

It means that something in the PDF is not correct according to the PDF Specification. if you can, recreate the PDF.

I seem to recall this error coming from some QuarkXPress files. Recreate the PDF as Leonard says.
