The illustration exceeds an implementation limit.

    Default The illustration exceeds an implementation limit.

    I posted this yesterday on the windoze side...

    I worked for a good hour on a native .ai file in AIv9.0 in WinXP, saving often, then closed it and quit the app.

    Later when I tried to open it I get:

    Can't open the illustration. The illustration
    exceeds an implementation limit.

    Offending operator: '1 1 0 1 Xy []0 d
    0 J O 1 w 4 m []0 d
    o XR
    /Def ;
    (BlendStyle) ,
    ; /Dict ;
    /Part ,
    ;
    /Part ,
    ;

    Beside telling me that I should at least be on 9.0.3 or whatever the upgrade is in v9, can anybody offer a way around this?

    I also copied it to a OSX machine and tried opening in AICS, and also to an OS9 machine and tried opening in AIv10, both with the same result.

    The file WILL open in Photoshop, so I may resort to rasterizing it all but I would rather not.

    Could I possibly open a v9.ai file in Acrobat and save as?

    Thanks in advance

    Does the file open to a blank page? If so try making a shape, circle or whatever on the page and then select all. Is the bounding box selecting more than the shape you just made? If so maybe your art is hiding off in nowhere land somewhere. Follow the bounding box to find it.

    I hear AI 9 has a bug when saving with the window shade up or minimized and causes an error when opening the file again.

    Though I'm not sure of the Offending error command it gives.

    Also try opening a new AI document and placing that file into it.

    Ah yes! The old window shade issue. I had forgotten about that one. I tried to search out the info on that on this site, but only find references to the fact that the 9.0.2 solves the problem. Does anybody have the fix for that? I rememeber there was a fix I just can't find it.

    Yes to the blank page. I will try the add object/select all/follow bounding box trick on Monday.

    Already tried that. Can you file>place a .ai file? or just an EPS? I don't see the .ai file in the place dialog when "all formats" is chosen by "types of files"

    No to placing a .ai file. But, you can change the designation to .pdf or .eps so that it will be placable. Though, you will end up with expanded elements.

    This is more of a last resort type of thing.

    You mean by simply renaming the file to a new extension? This is on a PC...

    Expanded elements I can live with.

    How 'bout you Mr. K, you rememeber the old window shade bug?

    I'm thinkin' maybe I've bumped up against it. You got any info on it still?

    Sorry, I cannot help you with the window shade issue.

    Yes, that is all you have to do even on Windows is just rename the file extension. Then it becomes placable. Forgot to mention, use .eps extention for version 8 and earlier and .pdf for 9+ versions.

    Yes, the key to getting rid of the window shade issue is to update to ai9.0.2, but you problem sounds more like the problem with the wheelchair symbol. Have you removed it from your startup files yet?

    Yes, updating is a must, (If it was up to me it would be to ai10.0.x) but now that I have possibly induced the bug, what to do about it in this one file? Is Dee's suggestion of copy/paste the accepted fix? Or renaming to .pdf as John suggests (as a last resort).

    This was a documented bug, yet I can't find any documentation in the knowledge base.

    What's up with the wheelchair symbol? I never heard of that problem. Is it a pattern swatch in the startup files that should be dumped? Why? and what makes you think that is related to my problem?

    John,

    There have been reports of files becoming corrupt from a problem with the stock wheelchair symbol from the startup documents. The fix has been to remove the symbol from the startup documents and resave. The closest that the Ai engineers have come to figuring out the problem is that it happens with some combinations of Hard Disks and saving. It was reported and talked about here about 1-1/2 years ago. Dropping a lot of the stock brushes, swatches, styles and symbols is a good idea anyway as it can take up 200k of file space in each document if you don't. Dee's suggestion is a possibility of a fix, as is John's. If you select All Dcouments in the Place dialog, you should be able to place .ai documents in a new file (at least it works in AI10.0.3). This should be the most reliable method.

    What finally worked was file place in Illy10.

    Placing in Illy9 was/is not an option apparently.

    While placing was an option in CS, it only brought in a samll part of the file.

    Thanks all for your help.
