The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
What causes the following message to occur when trying to import pdf files into Quark?
"The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version" Using Acrobat Pro vers. 7 and Quark 6.5. I get this periodically and I don't know why. I will make a pdf using the same setting as always and then I get this message. Thanks for any replies.

Re: The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
check the PDF version of the files (in Document Properties) you can import vs the ones you can't. Are they the same?

Re: The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
Probably PDF 1.5 or 1.6 files.
Adobe InDesign has no problems importing any publicly available version
of PDF (you can tell Acrobat 8 is on its way!) ....
You might want to downversion the PDF through ADVANCED/PDF Optimiser or
EPS the file (my last choice since it can rip out potential content) ...

Re: The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
Yes, fellas... it was a vers. 1.5 file. And yes, Jon, I placed it into InDesign with no problem. But the file that I am preparing has to be in Quark. So I made a pdf thru InDesign and placed that in the Quark doc. Thanks guys. One other question, is there a way to tell what font is missing in a pdf file? For instance, this pdf that I was having the problem with has a headline that did not have all the fonts embedded. If I go to Document Properties-->Fonts it tells me what fonts were embedded. If I go to Preflight-->General File Format Error-->Overview-->Fonts and select the font used it doesn't show me anything in the window. It says, the selected item can not be shown in the Snap View window. Thanks

Re: The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
Choose PDF/X-1a - this is a great check ...
Jon
PS - don't worry about the CGAT/trapping errors etc., etc

Re: The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
But, Jon, does that actually tell you if the font is not embedded? Cause I tried that earlier and I did not get that message. It lists a couple of problems, as U mentioned CGTA, trapping, Doc title empty, GTS_PDFXVersion key missing, Output intent missing, etc...but nuttin bout the darn font.

Yes - believe the preflight and not the pdf warnings from Quark (smile)

Re: The pdf cannot be opened because it is an unrecognized version
Maybe I'm asking for the wrong thing. What I am dealing with looks like they made the pdf when there was no printer font available. So I guess Preflight doesn't really know what's up with that. It does report the other fonts in the file as being embedded. But I would think that it would report an error when one chooses Genreal File Format Errors.
