"There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found."

Default "There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found."

Myself and a co-worker get this error when attempting to open an Adobe PDF directly from the SQL Reporting Services package EXPORT feature. If we choose to SAVE the PDF rather than OPEN it, the PDF saves fine and can be opened.

I realize this sounds like it is a problem with the Reporting Services package, except for the fact that other people in the office with other versions of Acrobat can view the report. Also, we had similar results (sans error message) trying to export or print to PDF using the Crystal 9.2.3 web reporting component. Here is what we've found:

    Machine & Software = Results:
    ---------------------------------
Win2k, Adobe Distiller 6.0.0, Crystal 9.2.3 web reporting = blank page upon export or print to PDF

Win2k, Adobe Distiller 6.0.1, Crystal 9.2.3 web reporting = blank page upon export or print to PDF

WinXP, Adobe Distiller 6.0.0, Crystal 9.2.3 web reporting = blank page upon export or print to PDF

WinXP, Adobe Distiller 6.0.1, Crystal 9.2.3 web reporting = blank page upon export or print to PDF

Win2k, Adobe Distiller 6.0.0, MS Report Services = Adobe error mesg ""There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found." upon OPEN, but SAVE works.

Win2k, Adobe Distiller 6.0.1, MS Report Services = Adobe error mesg ""There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found." upon OPEN, but SAVE works.

WinXP, Adobe Distiller 6.0.0, MS Report Services = Adobe error mesg ""There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found." upon OPEN, but SAVE works.

WinXP, Adobe Distiller 6.0.1, MS Report Services = Adobe error mesg ""There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found." upon OPEN, but SAVE works.

Win2k, Adobe Reader 5.0, MS Report Services = Adobe error mesg ""There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found." upon OPEN, but SAVE works.

    ---- Working configurations found

WinXP, Adobe Distiller 5.0, MS Report Services = OPENs fine.

Win2k, Adobe Reader 4.0, MS Report Services = OPENs fine.

    = = = = = = =

We are continuing to test other configurations, but I was just hoping someone might have some insight to help us focus our investigation of this problem.

    Thanks!

Default Re: "There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found."

Consider looking at other aspects than the creation software.
Especially the file names - any Unicode characters not in the Windows
default code page might cause this.
