"This document could not be printed" on Some Computers - Need a Fix
Hi. Help.
We have three PDF documents on the web that some people are unable to print.
<http://www.tnbaptist.org/pdf/kjv_youth_bible_2005.pdf>
<http://www.tnbaptist.org/pdf/niv_youth_bible_2005.pdf>
<http://www.tnbaptist.org/pdf/tourney_topics_2005.pdf>
I can print them with no problem. Others have printed them, too. We have some in our building, and elsewhere that are getting the same message: "This document could not be printed."
What can I do to fix this problem, and prevent it from happening again?
Best,
Mike

Re: "This document could not be printed" on Some Computers - Need a Fix
Perhaps if you provided some information concerning how the computers which WILL print the pdfs differ from those that WON'T someone would be able to help you; more information about how the PDF's were created would also likely be helpful.

Re: "This document could not be printed" on Some Computers - Need a Fix
Regarding how the computers differ, I cannot say how the computer of one visitor to our web site may differ from another.
The documents were originally created in Quark XPress, then made into PDFs. I put them through Acrobat Distiller 5, and, again, the files can be found at the previously mentioned URLs.

Re: "This document could not be printed" on Some Computers - Need a Fix
I took a quick look at the first & second of the PDF's & I noticed one thing that might be an issue... You seem to have a mix of Windows fonts & Mac Fonts; I am far from an expert in such things, but I have heard that there can be problems when a Mac machine tries to print Windows fonts & vice versa. The fonts are also embedded as subsets, as opposed to being fully embedded; I am not sure if this is an issue.
I am not sure what you would do to resolve the issue: I have no experience with Quark. Using "Base 14" fonts (Helevetica, Times, Swiss, Symbol & Courier, I believe) might help, as well as making sure that the fonts are completely embedded. I don't really have any other insights at the moment.

Printing from a brwoser window, or downloading and printing?
Printing to a PCL or PostScript printer?
What version of Reader are they using?

Re: "This document could not be printed" on Some Computers - Need a Fix
Some HP printers will report an error "The document could not be printed" when printed on the Mac version of Acrobat/Reader. Usually, using the Apple-provided printer driver instead of the HP-provided driver fixes this.
Also, Acrobat 6.0.0 will not print from the web if the URL to the PDF is too long. The 6.0.1 update fixes this problem.
Other than those two specific situations, there shouldn't be any problem printing.. unless the user is on an old system with insufficient RAM.

Re: "This document could not be printed" on Some Computers - Need a Fix
Acrobat Reader 6.0 was installed on many computers in our building last week. (Not mine, and I can still print the documents.)
How can I tell people to get Acrobat Reader 6.0.1? When I go to the regular download page (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html), it says you will download 6.0.

Try the Quark forums...
There should be no problems between Macs and PCs with font issues. Macs will just substitute the (offending) fonts.

Make sure you create pdf's from Quark 5.01.
