Thoth and incorrect unread message counts - Mac Networking

I use Thoth for news, and have a number of groups in my group list that opens when Thoth starts up. I have noticed quite often lately that the unread message count in the group window does not match the number of messages shown when I open that group. For example, just now one group said there were 7 unread messages, but only 3 appeared when I opened it. Once there were dozens of messages missing. I've noticed this just about every time I use Thoth lately. Is this a Thoth problem or a news server problem? -- -Thomas <http://www.bitjuggler.com/>...

Default Thoth and incorrect unread message counts

I use Thoth for news, and have a number of groups in my group list that

unread message count in the group window does not match the number of
messages shown when I open that group. For example, just now one group

Is this a Thoth problem or a news server problem?

Neither. The counts are approximate, and that is normal. Messages on
the server aren't renumbered when a message is deleted (there's no
reason to) so messages that have been deleted will be included in the
count Thoth displays until you actually retrieve headers for the group.
Most likely, the missing messages were spam and were deleted before you
    read them.

Send only plain text messages under 32K to the Reply-To address.
This mailbox is filtered aggressively to thwart spam and viruses.

Or it could be he has filters that mark the messages as read.
Sometimes it's easy to forget about the filters.
